Commodities Finish Trading Mostly Lower; Gold, Oil Futures End in Red

Commodities finished trading lower as crude oil and gold futures both skidded into the close despite a positive day for equities.

Crude oil for January delivery finished down $0.92, or 1.07%, at $87.70 a barrel. In other energy futures, heating oil is down 0.22% to $2.47 a gallon while natural gas fell 3.84%, to $4.06 per million British thermal units.

In energy ETFs, the United States Oil Fund ( USO ) is down 0.61% to $37.76. The United States Natural Gas ETF ( UNG ) is down 4.47% to $5.56.

Gold futures also finished lower following positive U.S. economic data.

Gold for February delivery finished down 1.1% to $1,371 an ounce. In other metal futures, silver fell 2.03% to $28.66 a troy ounce while copper was down 0.69% to $4.10 a pound.

The U.S. dollar index (DXY) is down 0.11% to $80.18.

In metal ETFs, SPDR Gold Trust ( GLD ) is down 0.92% to $133.46. Market Vectors Gold Miners ( GDX ) is down 1.92% to $59.82. iShares Silver Trust ( SLV ) is down 0.18% to $28.02.

Commodities to watch:

--Cocoa futures advanced Thursday to mark four straight days of gains. Political violence in the Ivory Coast, which threated to limit exports from the country, the world's top producer, helped drive prices higher, Bloomberg reported.

Commodity stocks to watch:

--ADRs of BHP Billiton (BHP) are higher. DMC Mining Services--a unit of Quadra--will develop two new mine shafts at BHP's Jansen Potash project in Saskatchewan. Earlier this year, BHP was unsuccessful at purchasing Saskatchewan-based Potash Corp. (POT)
