Chase Unveils Freedom’s Bonus Categories for Q1 2018

If you carry the Chase Freedom® , here's a New Year's resolution worth making: Set up that mobile wallet on your smartphone.

Chase just announced the card's 5% categories for the first quarter of 2018, and for the first time, the list includes purchases made on eligible mobile wallets: Chase Pay, Apple Pay, Android Pay and Samsung Pay. That category, in particular, could be lucrative for cardholders who already use their mobile wallets regularly.

Here are the 5% categories for Q1 2018:

  • Eligible mobile wallet purchases (Chase Pay, Apple Pay, Android Pay, Samsung Pay)
  • Gas stations
  • Internet, cable TV and phone service merchants (including AT&T, Verizon, Spotify, Hulu and Netflix)

Using the Chase Freedom® from Jan. 1 to March 31, 2018, you can earn 5% back in these categories on up to $1,500 in combined purchases (1% after that). To be eligible for these rewards, you must activate the categories on your card. You can do this through the Chase Freedom® activation page . As long as you do this by March 14, 2018, you'll be able to earn all those rewards retroactively from qualifying purchases made earlier in the quarter. Chase confirms that you won't get extra rewards for combining categories - for example, purchasing gas with a mobile wallet.

This is an especially generous offer if you live in a major city, where mobile wallets are now widely accepted. Even if acceptance is less common where you live, you may still be able to use your mobile wallet to make purchases on select websites. For example, you could use

This offer is also good for Chase, because it essentially incentivizes you to change your purchasing behavior in the long run. If you start using the card to autopay phone and internet bills and add the card as a default payment on your mobile wallet, you'll likely end up paying with it more often, even after the promotion has ended.
