Best/Worst Weekly ETF Returns: Biotech Soars On HIV Breakthrough
Five biotech funds with major holdings in California-based Gilead Sciences Inc. (NasdaqGS:GILD) rode the coattails of GILD's stock spike following the company's Tuesday release of improved clinical trial results with their HIV pill, TAF.
The SPDR S&P Biotech ETF (NYSEArca:XBI) led gains, pulling in a 5.89 percent increase. Gilead's stock rose $1.50 over the past five days, closing March 7 at $44.95 per share, according to data from Google finance.
The Dow rallied to historic highs over the same five-day period, jumping 275 points, or 1.9 percent, to close at 14,329.49, according to data from Google finance.
The db X-trackers MSCI Japan Hedged Equity fund (NYSEArca:DBJP) and the WisdomTree Japan Hedged Equity ETF (NYSEArca:DXJ) outperformed their peers as Japan's economic outlook also increased investor optimism.
A mixture of funds stumbled onto the worst performers list, with the Global X FTSE Greece 20 fund (NYSEArca:GREK) reporting the most shrinkage, sloughing off 5.44 percent.
Gold miners funds underperformed, with the Global X Pure Gold Miners ETF (NYSEArca:GGGG) and the Global X Gold Explorers fund (NYSEArca:GLDX) populating the bottom of the list as profit margin concerns continue to deter investor interest.
