I'm really getting tired off all the anti-America talk recently. How we're not as good as we used to be and countries like China are going to pass us up and we're all fat, and lazy and foreigners hate us. I for one, am sick of having to apologize to the world. You know what world, me, this bald eagle, Uncle Sam, and 319 million other Americans are done with the pleasantries. You don't like it, I don't care. You think anyone wants a roundhouse kick to the face while I'm wearing these bad boys? I don't think so.
America's unapologetic prowess is highlighted by our wonders of engineering. Our air force brings death from above, our military is the reigning back-to-back world war champion, and our naval supremacy is second to none. Our latest ship, the USS Milwaukee is a Freedom-class littoral combat ship that was commissioned on November 21 st of this year. Behold, that beautiful beast in all her glory. Measuring 388 feet long, this frigate-sized ship carries surface and anti-submarine warfare capabilities and mine countermeasures. The littoral combat ships can operate much closer to shore and sail faster than other vessels. They represent the best of our nation and our Navy.
There's just one thing. On its way from Milwaukee to San Diego, the Milwaukee's propulsion system failed and the boat had to be towed to Virginia. That's like getting a new Corvette and having it break down on the ride home from the dealership. Did taxpayers really just buy the world's most expensive lemon? It cost $437 million and didn't make it to port. I mean, not even close. An ocean away. Didn't even it make it to Florida where everything else in the US goes to break down.
The Milwaukee was built by Marinette Marine, once a subsidiary of the Manitowoc Company ( MTW ) , now owned by Fincantieri Marine Group. But really, it's defense contractor Lockheed Martin ( LMT ) who designed the vessel that's on the hook. Looks like fine metal debris that collected in the oil filter caused the system to shut down. Really? An oil filter? Dog, you can get those for like $8 bucks at AutoZone. You didn't have a spare on board? I think I know what really happened. These guys were in charge. Come on Lockheed, get it together. Lemme guess, you designed the hyperdrive on the Millennium Falcon too. Good thing the Milwaukee wasn't trying to escape from the Empire.
Lockheed is a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold) in an industry that ranks in the Top 6% of our Zacks Industry Rank. The aerospace and defense industry includes Zacks Rank #2 (Buy) stocks Boeing ( BA ) and General Dynamics ( GD ) . If you're looking for a top stock in this business, Leidos Holdings ( LDOS ) is a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy). A big reason for the rank is four analysts have upped their earnings estimates for the current year, jacking up consensus from $2.59 to $2.75. Back-to-back earnings surprises don't hurt the rank either. Leidos shares are trading near $55.
