Best Buys of August

Although August is a great month to find deals on back-to-school items, shoppers also can find discounts on a variety of other items. Dealnews , one of our 15 favorite sites for finding deals online , searched its archive of sales from previous years to predict what consumers can expect to find marked down this August. Take a look at what should be this month's best buys:

Back-to-school items. With sales-tax holidays in 15 states in August and sales at many retailers, now is the time to do your back-to-school shopping. You'll find markdowns on supplies, backpacks and clothing. Also look for deals on furniture for dorm rooms at Walmart and discounts on storage units at OfficeMax and The Container Store. However, dealnews warns shoppers not to jump at promotions specifically labeled as back-to-school or kid-specific early in the month because you might find better deals during storewide sales later. For example, last year Old Navy marked down children's clothing 20% in early August then had a 30% off sale storewide ten days later.

Swimwear. Look for deep discounts on swimwear this month. For example, Lands' End has marked down clearance swimwear an extra 20%. Eddie Bauer has some swimwear on clearance (up to 70% off). And Victoria's Secret has swimwear on sale, but offered its deepest discounts at the end of August last year (so you might want to hold out).

Shoes. If August 2010 is any indication of what to expect this year, you should see major sales on footwear this month. Steve Madden had one of the best sales last year, with an additional 50% off shoes already marked down 70%.

Laptops. College students' need for laptops has made August a great time to buy, with retailers offering discounts of 10% to 20%. Better yet, look for deals that include free extras, such as a printer. The deepest discounts, though, come on Black Friday -- the day after Thanksgiving.

Grills. Look for retailers to start marking down grills as summer ends. For the deepest discounts, though, hold out until the weather cools down in early fall.
