Barclays Collaborates With Interpol to Fight Cybercrime

As cybersecurity breaches multiply in frequency and cost, several organizations are undertaking measures to combat cybercrime. In the first attempt of its kind, UK-based Barclays PLCBCS will work directly with the Interpol to fight cybercrime more efficiently.

A cyber-crime analyst from the company will work full-time alongside the police and other experts in Interpol's Cyber Fusion Centre to facilitate effective information-sharing and response to imminent threats.

Moreover, Barclays' analyst will join other experts from Cyber Defense Institute, Kaspersky Lab, LAC, NEC, SECOM, Trend Micro, the University of South Australia and the University of Waikato in New Zealand, which are already based at the Interpol Global Complex for Innovation (IGCI).

The Cyber Fusion Centre, which is based in IGCI in Singapore, provides a neutral, global platform for law enforcement, the private sector and academia to work together, sharing threat information and developing operational responses.

"The scale and complexity of today's cyber-threat landscape means cooperation across all sectors is vital," said Noboru Nakatani, the IGCI's executive director.

The current agreement with Barclays reflects the Interpol's ongoing commitment to work with the private sector and will broaden joint efforts in cyber security through intelligence sharing, training and awareness about cyber threats mitigation, and provide actionable recommendations for public and private institutions on strengthening their cyber resilience.

"Preventing cybercrime and keeping our citizens safe from being victims of crime in cyberspace is a global task and cannot be done without the involvement of Interpol," said Barclay's Group Chief Information Security Officer Troels Oerting.

Cybersecurity breaches have been witnessed in almost every industry, with the financial sector always a key target for cyber attacks. Big banks such as JPMorgan Chase & Co. JPM and Morgan Stanley MS have been among the victims last year. Also, HSBC Holdings plc HSBC fought off a denial of service attack on its online banking system last month.

Currently, Barclays holds a Zacks Rank #4 (Sell).
