Bank earnings dominate docket

Today's economic calendar is quiet ahead of a heavy flow of bank earnings scheduled for the rest of the week.

The Commerce Department will announce monthly retail sales in the morning. JP Morgan and Wells Fargo report quarterly results before the opening bell, followed by Linear Technology in the afternoon.

Wednesday brings results from Bank of America, the producer-price index, the New York Federal Reserve's Empire manufacturing index, and the Federal Reserve's beige book of economic conditions.

Thursday's earnings calendar is even more active, with Citigroup, Goldman Sachs, and UnitedHealth reporting in the morning. The afternoon features Intel, American Express, and Capital One. Economic releases include initial jobless claims, consumer prices, the Philadelphia Fed's regional index, and homebuilder sentiment.

The biggest names reporting earnings on Friday morning are General Electric, Morgan Stanley, Schlumberger, and Bank of New York Mellon. Housing starts, building permits, industrial production, and consumer sentiment will also be released.
