Auto sales, factory orders on deck

Today is the quietest session of the week, led by car sales and factory orders.

The auto numbers will be announced early, followed by factory orders at 10 a.m. ET. Economists predict orders fell 0.9 percent in September, compared with a 1.7 percent decline in August. The factory numbers will probably have little impact on sentiment.

Archer Daniels Midland, Emerson Electric, Mosaic, and Zoetis announce quarterly results before the opening bell. Activision Blizzard, CBS, Tesla Motors, and U.S. Steel follow in the post-market.

Tomorrow is much busier, with ADP's private-sector payrolls report and an appearance in Congress by Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen. Mortgage applications, the trade balance, ISM's service-sector index, and crude-oil inventories will come out as well. Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, Cognizant Technology, and Time Warner report in the morning. Facebook, Qualcomm, MetLife, and Prudential Financial are slated for the afternoon.
