U.S. telecom behemoth AT&T, Inc. T is working closely with Nokia Corp. NOK on a new solution to help utilities in the U.S. build a private, safe, dependable and high-capacity Long-Term Evolution (LTE) network. Notably, both the companies expect to make this offer accessible in the second half of 2016.

LTE, the most sought after next-generation (4G) super-fast wireless communications technology, is gaining rapid momentum in the U.S. 4G wireless networks primarily aim to cope with the substantial rise in demand for high-speed wireless data services and mobile video.

Notably, the new solution brings together AT&T's spectrum alongside Nokia's LTE Technology. This solution will address utilities at times and locations their own networks cannot and help utilities gain stability for critical grid applications. It will also provide a network to utilities that can evolve with the distribution grid of the future.

Meanwhile, contrary to other solutions that rely on unlicensed spectrum, the new solution will function on AT&T's licensed spectrum to help utilities set up their own Field Area Networks (FAN).

Moreover, AT&T revealed that given its widespread reach, the new solution unfolds automation options that were earlier inaccessible. It also supports allocation functions at substations, renewable energy sources coupled with supervision of remote devices and Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) solutions.

Also, both AT&T and Nokia will assist utilities in migrating their wireless devices and AMI collectors to the private solution. Meanwhile, the solution also supports micro grids, metering solutions, amongst other things, that too at a nominal cost. Interestingly, the employment of standards-based LTE technology will keep the solution pertinent even in the future.

Thus, with the new solution, AT&T and Nokia aim to help utilities address issues, enhance communication and meet other requirements, now and in the future.

Both AT&T and Nokia carry a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold). Better-ranked stocks in the same sector are Ericsson ERIC and Windstream Holdings, Inc. WIN . Both stocks hold a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy).
