Asian Stocks Close Mixed; Nikkei Flat Ahead of U.S. Jobs Data, Hang Seng Reopens Higher After Holiday Thanks to Chinese PMI Data

Stocks in Asia closed mixed on Friday. The Nikkei ended the day near flat as investors held off for U.S. jobs data, released after market close in Japan, for indications of whether or not the Fed will raise interest rates by the end of the year.

Chinese mainland bourses remained closed for the week-long National Day holiday, but the Hang Seng reopened Friday. The index posted a 3% gain in response to data out Thursday showing signs of improvement in China's manufacturing sector.

China's official purchasing managers index rose to 49.8 in September, up from 49.7 in August. While still below 50, the threshold separating expansion from contraction, this beat analyst expectations for 49.6.
