Apple's Live Photos are Now Available For Users on Facebook's iOS App

Today, it looks like Apple AAPL and Facebook FB are joining forces: the social media company will now support the tech giant's "Live Photos" tool that debuted with the iPhone 6s.

Facebook is following in the footsteps of popular blogging site Tumblr, who integrated the photos just a few days ago. It will become available to users through a software update, which hit this morning, and you can now upload and view Live Photos from within Facebook's iOS app.

The uploading process differs very little from regular, or standard, pictures. There is only one extra step: while choosing a picture to upload from your phone's camera role with Live Photo capability, a "LIVE" option appear in the bottom right of your screen; if you tap that, the picture will upload as a Live Photo. And if you don't, the standard version of the picture will be published.

As of right now, only iPhone 6s and 6s Plus can capture Live Photos, but with Facebook, any device operating on iOS 9-including iPhones as old as the 4s-will be able to view the interactive pictures.

Once the Live Photos are in Facebook's News Feed, they will show up as standard pictures by default, just like any other images would. However, in the bottom right of each picture there will be a set of circles indicating the Live Photo option, the same icon Apple uses in its iPhones. You can then press and hold the circle icon, and the Live Photo will start to play; if you lift your finger, the image will fade back to standard form.

It's important to note that Facebook is not rolling out support to all users at once, mainly since Live Photos are still new; it's only been three months or so since Apple debuted the feature. Some people may start to see Live Photos popping up in the News Feed as early as this morning, but the majority of Facebook users will have to wait until 2016.
