Apple (AAPL) shares are down 47 cents at $170.63, after the company said its " HomePod " smart speaker, which many expect to compete with Amazon's (AMZN) Echo device and Alphabet's (GOOGL) Google's " Google Home," won't sell until the beginning of next year, versus what it previously said would be sometime in December, when the device was announced on June 5th during the company's annual developer conference.

TechCrunch's Brian Heaterrelates that Apple issued a brief statement, and that a spokesperson told him the company "needs a little more time before it's ready for our customers." The date mentioned is "early 2018."

HomePod is expected to sell for $349.
