E-commerce giant Amazon.com Inc.AMZN announced the launch of M4, the latest generation of Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) General Purpose instances.
Customers can use M4 instances by means of the AWS Management Console, AWS Command Line Interface (CLI), AWS SDKs, and third-party libraries.
M4 instances are available in North Virginia, Oregon, and Northern California in the U.S.; Ireland, Germany, Singapore, Tokyo, and Sydney.
What Does M4 Have to Offer?
The M4 instances are based on custom 2.4 GHz Intel INTC Xeon E5-2676 v3 Haswell processors that are optimized specifically for EC2. This will enable it to deliver considerable processing power. Using the custom Intel Haswell processor, M4 instances offer new capabilities to the General Purpose and come in larger sizes.
It provides dedicated bandwidth to Amazon Elastic Block Store (Amazon EBS) and Enhanced Networking for greater packet per second (PPS) performance, lower network jitter, and lower network latencies.
M4 will be available in five different instance sizes varying from 2 virtual CPUs (vCPUs) with 8 GB of memory (m4.large) to 40 vCPUs and 160 GB of memory (m4.10xlarge).
M4 instances are Amazon Elastic Block Store (Amazon EBS)-optimized by default at no added charge offering dedicated bandwidth to EBS. It also provides Enhanced Networking for greater packet per second (PPS) performance, lower fluctuations and latencies in network. Leveraging Enhanced Networking, M4 can deliver up to four times the packet rate of instances than without it.
M4 instances are compatible with wide range of applications including relational and in-memory databases, gaming servers, caching fleets, batch processing, and business applications like SAP and Microsoft SharePoint.
What's Amazon EC2?
The Amazon EC2 is an online service and forms an integral part of its cloud computing platform, AWS. It allows developers to configure cloud capacity rapidly with minimum friction and simplifies web-scale computing. It permits developers to use Amazon's computing environment with complete control over computing tools to build applications that are less prone to failure.
It offers features such as virtual computing environments, known as instances along with pre-configured templates for the instances, secure login information for instances using key pairs and many more features to swiftly build and deploy applications.
Our Take
AWS is the biggest public cloud in the market. But the competition in the cloud market is intensifying and so is the cloud storage war between Microsoft MSFT and Google GOOGL . But amid this war we remain extremely positive about AWS's growth prospects. The latest launch is basically an added feather to its cap.
Amazon has a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold).
