In a customer-friendly move, Seattle, WA-based Alaska Air Group ALK inked a bilateral codeshare agreement with Iceland carrier Icelandair. Moreover, customers of both carriers will be able to avail their frequent flier programs. The codeshare agreement will come into effect from Nov 1, subject to government approval.

Following the materialization of the deal, customers of both carriers will enjoy benefits such as seamless reservations and ticketing, one-stop check-in, baggage checked to its final destination and coordinated flight schedules. Apart from enjoying consistent service standards, passengers will earn miles and/or points on the reciprocal carrier.

A codeshare pact allows sharing of flights, which implies that a passenger has the free will to avail any flight operated by either of the companies under the agreement, irrespective of the flight number.

The Iceland-based carrier operates flights connecting multiple destinations in North America and Europe. The new deal is thus expected to boost travel between U.S. and Europe thereby augmenting the top lines of both carriers.

We note that Alaska Air Group, the parent company of Alaska Airlines, and Icelandair are not strangers to each other. They had a mileage-plan partnership from 2010 onward, which terminated in 2013. Now that the carriers are together again, we expect investors to keenly watch the progress of the partnership, once it becomes operation.

Apart from the new deal with Iceland's flagship carrier, Alaska Air Group was also in news when it announced the commencement of non-stop flights connecting Seattle and Nashville, TN. The Boeing Company's BA fuel-efficient, next generation 737 jets are being used for the flights on the route.
