Leading power and automation giant ABB Ltd.ABB has teamed up with Solar Impulse, a solar energy-powered airplane, to aid the crew accomplish its first round-the-world flight. This epic voyage, scheduled to begin on 9 Mar, 2015 from Abu Dhabi, will be inked in the echelons of the aviation history.

Inside the Headlines

ABB's collaboration with Solar Impulse is based on the belief of optimizing resource consumption and promoting renewable energy usage, and dates back to last year. ABB provided Solar Impulse with three of its most efficient engineers who contributed immensely in improving power yield from cells. Also, the company's profound knowledge and expertise had also helped Solar Impulse team to improve its charging electronics for boosting battery performance.

Solar Impulse is powered by 17,248 solar cells which will allow the aircraft to climb altitudes as high as 10,000 meters during daytime. Charging themselves during the day, the cells help the aircraft fly at night. Solar Impulse has been setting new records in aviation since 2010, which include record performances in duration, altitude and distance flown while traversing Europe, the United States and North Africa.

Solar Impulse is expected to cover a 35,000 km route under the supervision of pilots Bertrand Piccard and Andre Borschberg. It will have stoppages in key cities of the Middle East, India, Myanmar, China and the U.S. before heading back to Abu Dhabi by mid-2015.

ABB and Cleaner Earth

A key player in advocating renewable energy, ABB has already established itself as one of the most reputable suppliers of wind energy. Currently the second-largest solar inverter supplier, the company has also committed itself toward improving power-efficiency in grids. ABB's other attempts to promote a pollution-free environment include developing fast-charging network for electric cars in Europe and China.

Our Take

We believe that demand for cleaner, renewable sources of energy is on a rise as governments in most of the developed countries are on a drive to minimize environmental pollution and CO2 footprint. ABB's attempt to create sustainable aviation on cleaner technology comes at the most opportune moment as it aims to capitalize on the latest environmental regulations of governments worldwide. This, in turn, is expected to strengthen the company's market share in renewable energy sector, going forward.
