3D Systems-Penn State to Aid 3D Printing Advancement

3D Systems CorporationDDD joined hands with the Pennsylvania State University to aid the adoption of Direct Metal Printing ('DMP') technology in the U.S. aerospace and defense industry. In particular, both the entities will facilitate the operations in the Center for Innovative Materials Processing Through Direct Digital Deposition ('CIMP-3D').

This center will witness combined research efforts of DMP experts from both 3D Systems and Penn State on high-tech ProXTM DMP technology of 3D Systems. CIMP-3D is used as a top-notch resource for escalating and deploying additive manufacturing ('AM') technology for critical applications.

The center serves as the Additive Manufacturing Demonstration Facility ('CMDF') under the Open Manufacturing Program of Defense Advanced Research Project Agency (DARPA). At present, the lab is playing a versatile role in the advancement of 3D printing technology via comprehensive R&D portfolio and education programs.

The alliance is formed to attain three major goals - development of breakthrough, high-resolution DMP technology; offer DS' DMP technology related training to U.S. defense/aerospace workforce; and aid government organizations in sponsoring projects meant for succeeding adoption of DMP for defense companies. Accordingly, 3D Systems and Penn State are working on various previously announced on-site projects including NAVSEA-allied project and aircraft heat exchangers development project.

Conclusion

The surging demand for 3D printing is driven by its extensive use across diverse industries ranging from aviation and healthcare to automobiles and fashion. With 3D Systems and U.S. Navy joining forces, the industrial base of U.S. defense is likely to witness massive improvement.

We believe the company's latest move reflects its efforts toward taking 3D printing to a completely new level by expanding its reach and adaptability across various industries. In relation to this, last month, the company launched Fabricate , a smart fashion application, which will likely take the whole textile industry by storm. Such deals will likely give this Zacks Rank #4 (Sell) stock a much-required boost, going forward.

Despite 3D printing markets' long-term potential, broader concerns such as economic slowdown, inflation, fluctuations in currency and commodity price, and credit availability have severely affected its performance of late, as the company sources over 46% of revenues from outside the U.S. On account of the ongoing volatility, 3D Systems had also withdrawn its guidance for 2015, thereby disappointing investors.

Some better-ranked stocks in the technology sector include Google Inc. GOOGL , Skullcandy, Inc. SKUL and ChannelAdvisor Corp. ECOM . All three stocks hold a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy).
