Wednesday Sector Leaders: Energy, Consumer Products

Looking at the sectors faring best as of midday Wednesday, shares of Energy companies are outperforming other sectors, up 0.9%. Within that group, Cimarex Energy Co (Symbol: XEC) and Concho Resources Inc (Symbol: CXO) are two large stocks leading the way, showing a gain of 3.4% and 3.1%, respectively. Among energy ETFs , one ETF following the sector is the Energy Select Sector SPDR ETF (Symbol: XLE), which is up 0.7% on the day, and up 3.77% year-to-date. Cimarex Energy Co, meanwhile, is down 26.76% year-to-date, and Concho Resources Inc, is down 6.32% year-to-date. Combined, XEC and CXO make up approximately 2.5% of the underlying holdings of XLE.

The next best performing sector is the Consumer Products sector, higher by 0.7%. Among large Consumer Products stocks, Altria Group Inc (Symbol: MO) and Philip Morris International Inc (Symbol: PM) are the most notable, showing a gain of 6.3% and 3.5%, respectively. One ETF closely tracking Consumer Products stocks is the iShares U.S. Consumer Goods ETF ( IYK ), which is up 1.1% in midday trading, and down 3.60% on a year-to-date basis. Altria Group Inc, meanwhile, is down 9.48% year-to-date, and Philip Morris International Inc, is down 22.07% year-to-date. Combined, MO and PM make up approximately 11.5% of the underlying holdings of IYK.
