Wednesday Sector Laggards: Utilities, Financial

The worst performing sector as of midday Wednesday is the Utilities sector, showing a 0.7% loss. Within that group, Sempra Energy (Symbol: SRE) and Duke Energy Corp (Symbol: DUK) are two large stocks that are lagging, showing a loss of 1.4% and 1.4%, respectively. Among utilities ETFs , one ETF following the sector is the Utilities Select Sector SPDR ETF (Symbol: XLU), which is down 0.8% on the day, and down 5.56% year-to-date. Sempra Energy, meanwhile, is down 2.13% year-to-date, and Duke Energy Corp, is down 8.77% year-to-date. Combined, SRE and DUK make up approximately 12.6% of the underlying holdings of XLU.

The next worst performing sector is the Financial sector, up 0.3%. Among large Financial stocks, Boston Properties Inc (Symbol: BXP) and Brighthouse Financial Inc (Symbol: BHF) are the most notable, showing a loss of 1.8% and 1.3%, respectively. One ETF closely tracking Financial stocks is the Financial Select Sector SPDR ETF ( XLF ), which is up 0.4% in midday trading, and up 1.77% on a year-to-date basis. Boston Properties Inc, meanwhile, is down 9.52% year-to-date, and Brighthouse Financial Inc, is down 18.50% year-to-date. BHF makes up approximately 0.1% of the underlying holdings of XLF.
