Tuesday Sector Laggards: Energy, Materials

Looking at the sectors faring worst as of midday Tuesday, shares of Energy companies are underperforming other sectors, showing a 0.6% loss. Within that group, Devon Energy Corp. (Symbol: DVN) and Baker Hughes, A GE Company (Symbol: BHGE) are two large stocks that are lagging, showing a loss of 3.1% and 3.0%, respectively. Among energy ETFs , one ETF following the sector is the Energy Select Sector SPDR ETF (Symbol: XLE), which is down 0.2% on the day, and down 6.42% year-to-date. Devon Energy Corp., meanwhile, is down 16.26% year-to-date, and Baker Hughes, A GE Company, is down 17.16% year-to-date. Combined, DVN and BHGE make up approximately 2.5% of the underlying holdings of XLE.

The next worst performing sector is the Materials sector, showing a 0.1% loss. Among large Materials stocks, Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. (Symbol: GT) and Sealed Air Corp (Symbol: SEE) are the most notable, showing a loss of 2.6% and 2.2%, respectively. One ETF closely tracking Materials stocks is the Materials Select Sector SPDR ETF ( XLB ), which is up 0.1% in midday trading, and down 1.42% on a year-to-date basis. Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co., meanwhile, is down 8.84% year-to-date, and Sealed Air Corp, is down 15.64% year-to-date. SEE makes up approximately 1.2% of the underlying holdings of XLB.
