Thursday Sector Laggards: Materials, Energy

In afternoon trading on Thursday, Materials stocks are the worst performing sector, showing a 0.3% loss. Within the sector, Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. (Symbol: GT) and Vulcan Materials Co (Symbol: VMC) are two large stocks that are lagging, showing a loss of 2.5% and 1.5%, respectively. Among the high volume ETFs , one ETF closely following materials stocks is the Materials Select Sector SPDR ETF (Symbol: XLB), which is down 0.1% on the day, and down 3.99% year-to-date. Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co., meanwhile, is down 25.78% year-to-date, and Vulcan Materials Co , is down 1.06% year-to-date. VMC makes up approximately 3.0% of the underlying holdings of XLB.

The next worst performing sector is the Energy sector, showing a 0.1% loss. Among large Energy stocks, Marathon Oil Corp. (Symbol: MRO) and TechnipFMC plc (Symbol: FTI) are the most notable, showing a loss of 2.3% and 2.1%, respectively. One ETF closely tracking Energy stocks is the Energy Select Sector SPDR ETF ( XLE ), which is down 0.1% in midday trading, and up 5.79% on a year-to-date basis. Marathon Oil Corp., meanwhile, is up 23.04% year-to-date, and TechnipFMC plc is up 1.26% year-to-date. Combined, MRO and FTI make up approximately 2.2% of the underlying holdings of XLE.
