Thursday Sector Laggards: Energy, Materials

In afternoon trading on Thursday, Energy stocks are the worst performing sector, showing a 3.5% loss. Within that group, TechnipFMC plc (Symbol: FTI) and Cimarex Energy Co (Symbol: XEC) are two of the day's laggards, showing a loss of 8.3% and 7.9%, respectively. Among energy ETFs , one ETF following the sector is the Energy Select Sector SPDR ETF (Symbol: XLE), which is down 2.8% on the day, and down 9.62% year-to-date. TechnipFMC plc, meanwhile, is down 29.46% year-to-date, and Cimarex Energy Co, is down 38.44% year-to-date. Combined, FTI and XEC make up approximately 2.2% of the underlying holdings of XLE.

The next worst performing sector is the Materials sector, showing a 2.0% loss. Among large Materials stocks, Freeport-McMoran Copper & Gold (Symbol: FCX) and Mosaic Co (Symbol: MOS) are the most notable, showing a loss of 4.3% and 3.9%, respectively. One ETF closely tracking Materials stocks is the Materials Select Sector SPDR ETF ( XLB ), which is down 2.4% in midday trading, and down 11.70% on a year-to-date basis. Freeport-McMoran Copper & Gold, meanwhile, is down 41.14% year-to-date, and Mosaic Co is up 32.48% year-to-date. Combined, FCX and MOS make up approximately 6.9% of the underlying holdings of XLB.
