This Is How Amazon Vs. Google AI 'Proxy Fight' Could Turn Out: Engadget

LAS VEGAS - Amazon ( AMZN ), Google parent Alphabet ( GOOGL ) and other tech giants are currently battling it out for who will become the dominant provider of AI-enabled digital assistant capabilities, and Engadget Executive Editor Dana Wollman likened this to what we saw with mapping and mobile operating systems.

[ibd-display-video id=3080058 width=50 float=left autostart=true] "Google Maps and Apple Maps used be in sort of a deadlock,"  Wollman told Investor's Business Daily at CES. "I think Google Maps has clearly won that one. But I think now the race is really still in progress for the best personal assistant. They're all useful in some ways. They're all promising. None of them are perfect."

An endless amount of third-party devices are enabled with Amazon Alexa, Google Home or another service - essentially amounting to a "proxy fight" among the tech giants, according to Wollman. But could we see a single winner in the digital assistant space? Wollman doesn't necessarily think so.

"In assistants, we currently have offerings from Amazon, Google, Microsoft, Apple and Samsung and maybe some others that are just entering the space," she said. "I don't think ultimately there's room for all those companies. So maybe more than one company but definitely not half a dozen."
