Monday Sector Laggards: Industrial, Materials

Looking at the sectors faring worst as of midday Monday, shares of Industrial companies are underperforming other sectors, showing a 0.4% loss. Within that group, Illinois Tool Works, Inc. (Symbol: ITW) and Stanley Black & Decker Inc (Symbol: SWK) are two large stocks that are lagging, showing a loss of 7.8% and 4.0%, respectively. Among industrial ETFs , one ETF following the sector is the Industrial Select Sector SPDR ETF (Symbol: XLI), which is down 0.5% on the day, and down 1.27% year-to-date. Illinois Tool Works, Inc., meanwhile, is down 17.90% year-to-date, and Stanley Black & Decker Inc, is down 17.66% year-to-date. Combined, ITW and SWK make up approximately 2.8% of the underlying holdings of XLI.

The next worst performing sector is the Materials sector, showing a 0.4% loss. Among large Materials stocks, Albemarle Corp. (Symbol: ALB) and Mohawk Industries, Inc. (Symbol: MHK) are the most notable, showing a loss of 3.8% and 2.5%, respectively. One ETF closely tracking Materials stocks is the Materials Select Sector SPDR ETF ( XLB ), which is down 0.4% in midday trading, and down 3.22% on a year-to-date basis. Albemarle Corp., meanwhile, is down 28.81% year-to-date, and Mohawk Industries, Inc., is down 20.74% year-to-date. ALB makes up approximately 1.8% of the underlying holdings of XLB.
