Health care stocks were split between winners and loser Thursday, including a more than 0.2% gain for the NYSE Health Care Index in recent trading. Shares of health care companies in the S&P 500 were down less than 0.1% as a group while the Nasdaq Biotechnology index ( NBI ) was climbing nearly 0.4%.

+ Jazz Pharmaceuticals ( JAZZ ) was narrowly higher Thursday after saying it has submitted a new drug application to the US Food and Drug Administration for its solriamfetol investigational treatment for excessive sleepiness in adults with narcolepsy or obstructive sleep apnea.

In other sector news:

+ AEterna Zentaris ( AEZS ) soared Thursday after federal regulators approved the company's new drug application for its Macrilen ghrelin agonist to assist with the diagnosis of patients with growth hormone deficiency. The company estimates about 60,000 people are tested yearly for AGHD in the United States, Canada and Europe.

+ Johnson & Johnson ( JNJ ) was higher after federal regulators designated the company's new drug application for its apalutamide prostate cancer medication for priority review, cutting four months off the normal 10-month period for the agency to make its decision on US marketing approval.

- Acasti Pharma (ACST,ACST.V) fell as much as 29% to a session low of 84 cents a share in US trading after the Canadian biotech company priced a $10 million offering of 9.9 million shares at $1.01 apiece, a 14.4% discount to Wednesday's closing price.
