Friday Sector Leaders: Utilities, Energy

Looking at the sectors faring best as of midday Friday, shares of Utilities companies are outperforming other sectors, losing just 0.2%. Within that group, NRG Energy Inc (Symbol: NRG) and Xcel Energy Inc (Symbol: XEL) are two large stocks leading the way, showing a gain of 2.8% and 1.6%, respectively. Among utilities ETFs , one ETF following the sector is the Utilities Select Sector SPDR ETF (Symbol: XLU), which is down 0.2% on the day, and up 6.31% year-to-date. NRG Energy Inc, meanwhile, is up 33.90% year-to-date, and Xcel Energy Inc is up 6.60% year-to-date. Combined, NRG and XEL make up approximately 4.3% of the underlying holdings of XLU.

The next best performing sector is the Energy sector, losing just 0.4%. Among large Energy stocks, EQT Corp (Symbol: EQT) and Apache Corp (Symbol: APA) are the most notable, showing a gain of 5.1% and 2.2%, respectively. One ETF closely tracking Energy stocks is the Energy Select Sector SPDR ETF ( XLE ), which is down 0.5% in midday trading, and down 3.40% on a year-to-date basis. EQT Corp, meanwhile, is down 35.58% year-to-date, and Apache Corp, is down 10.40% year-to-date. Combined, EQT and APA make up approximately 2.6% of the underlying holdings of XLE.
