Friday Sector Leaders: Materials, Consumer Products

Looking at the sectors faring best as of midday Friday, shares of Materials companies are outperforming other sectors, not showing much of a loss. Within the sector, Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. (Symbol: GT) and Mohawk Industries, Inc. (Symbol: MHK) are two large stocks leading the way, showing a gain of 7.1% and 3.2%, respectively. Among the high volume ETFs , one ETF closely following materials stocks is the Materials Select Sector SPDR ETF (Symbol: XLB), which is down 0.4% on the day, and down 1.23% year-to-date. Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co., meanwhile, is down 29.03% year-to-date, and Mohawk Industries, Inc., is down 32.95% year-to-date.

The next best performing sector is the Consumer Products sector, losing just 0.4%. Among large Consumer Products stocks, Fortune Brands Home & Security, Inc. (Symbol: FBHS) and Jefferies Group Inc. (Symbol: JEF) are the most notable, showing a gain of 7.0% and 5.9%, respectively. One ETF closely tracking Consumer Products stocks is the iShares U.S. Consumer Goods ETF ( IYK ), which is down 0.4% in midday trading, and down 4.46% on a year-to-date basis. Fortune Brands Home & Security, Inc., meanwhile, is down 15.02% year-to-date, and Jefferies Group Inc., is down 6.99% year-to-date. JEF makes up approximately 0.3% of the underlying holdings of IYK.
