Friday Sector Laggards: Utilities, Energy

Looking at the sectors faring worst as of midday Friday, shares of Utilities companies are underperforming other sectors, showing a 0.6% loss. Within that group, Dominion Energy Inc (Symbol: D) and Pinnacle West Capital Corp (Symbol: PNW) are two of the day's laggards, showing a loss of 3.1% and 1.4%, respectively. Among utilities ETFs , one ETF following the sector is the Utilities Select Sector SPDR ETF (Symbol: XLU), which is down 0.6% on the day, and up 0.35% year-to-date. Dominion Energy Inc , meanwhile, is down 2.55% year-to-date, and Pinnacle West Capital Corp, is down 0.36% year-to-date. Combined, D and PNW make up approximately 9.0% of the underlying holdings of XLU.

The next worst performing sector is the Energy sector, showing a 0.5% loss. Among large Energy stocks, EOG Resources, Inc. (Symbol: EOG) and ConocoPhillips (Symbol: COP) are the most notable, showing a loss of 2.9% and 2.6%, respectively. One ETF closely tracking Energy stocks is the Energy Select Sector SPDR ETF ( XLE ), which is down 0.7% in midday trading, and up 8.02% on a year-to-date basis. EOG Resources, Inc., meanwhile, is up 10.40% year-to-date, and ConocoPhillips is up 6.07% year-to-date. Combined, EOG and COP make up approximately 10.9% of the underlying holdings of XLE.
