Friday Sector Laggards: Utilities, Energy

The worst performing sector as of midday Friday is the Utilities sector, showing a 0.9% loss. Within the sector, Southern Company (Symbol: SO) and PPL Corp (Symbol: PPL) are two large stocks that are lagging, showing a loss of 2.9% and 2.2%, respectively. Among utilities ETFs , one ETF following the sector is the Utilities Select Sector SPDR ETF (Symbol: XLU), which is down 1.1% on the day, and up 4.35% year-to-date. Southern Company , meanwhile, is down 3.87% year-to-date, and PPL Corp, is down 0.92% year-to-date. Combined, SO and PPL make up approximately 9.2% of the underlying holdings of XLU.

The next worst performing sector is the Energy sector, showing a 0.8% loss. Among large Energy stocks, Cimarex Energy Co (Symbol: XEC) and Phillips 66 (Symbol: PSX) are the most notable, showing a loss of 2.3% and 2.3%, respectively. One ETF closely tracking Energy stocks is the Energy Select Sector SPDR ETF ( XLE ), which is down 0.5% in midday trading, and up 1.64% on a year-to-date basis. Cimarex Energy Co, meanwhile, is down 31.22% year-to-date, and Phillips 66 is up 15.02% year-to-date. Combined, XEC and PSX make up approximately 4.0% of the underlying holdings of XLE.
