Friday Sector Laggards: Technology & Communications, Energy

The worst performing sector as of midday Friday is the Technology & Communications sector, showing a 0.1% loss. Within the sector, Applied Materials, Inc. (Symbol: AMAT) and NVIDIA Corp (Symbol: NVDA) are two large stocks that are lagging, showing a loss of 6.5% and 4.8%, respectively. Among technology ETFs , one ETF following the sector is the Technology Select Sector SPDR ETF (Symbol: XLK), which is up 0.1% on the day, and up 15.05% year-to-date. Applied Materials, Inc., meanwhile, is down 12.67% year-to-date, and NVIDIA Corp is up 26.87% year-to-date. Combined, AMAT and NVDA make up approximately 2.9% of the underlying holdings of XLK.

The next worst performing sector is the Energy sector, higher by 0.2%. Among large Energy stocks, Cimarex Energy Co (Symbol: XEC) and Baker Hughes, A GE Company (Symbol: BHGE) are the most notable, showing a loss of 1.7% and 1.7%, respectively. One ETF closely tracking Energy stocks is the Energy Select Sector SPDR ETF ( XLE ), which is up 0.2% in midday trading, and up 1.79% on a year-to-date basis. Cimarex Energy Co, meanwhile, is down 32.42% year-to-date, and Baker Hughes, A GE Company, is down 0.21% year-to-date. Combined, XEC and BHGE make up approximately 1.6% of the underlying holdings of XLE.
