Friday Sector Laggards: Technology & Communications, Consumer Products

The worst performing sector as of midday Friday is the Technology & Communications sector, showing a 0.7% loss. Within that group, Symantec Corp (Symbol: SYMC) and Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (Symbol: AMD) are two large stocks that are lagging, showing a loss of 33.3% and 1.9%, respectively. Among technology ETFs , one ETF following the sector is the Technology Select Sector SPDR ETF (Symbol: XLK), which is down 0.3% on the day, and up 9.46% year-to-date. Symantec Corp, meanwhile, is down 30.35% year-to-date, and Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. is up 15.79% year-to-date. Combined, SYMC and AMD make up approximately 0.3% of the underlying holdings of XLK.

The next worst performing sector is the Consumer Products sector, showing a 0.1% loss. Among large Consumer Products stocks, Philip Morris International Inc (Symbol: PM) and Altria Group Inc (Symbol: MO) are the most notable, showing a loss of 2.0% and 1.5%, respectively. One ETF closely tracking Consumer Products stocks is the iShares U.S. Consumer Goods ETF ( IYK ), which is down 0.3% in midday trading, and down 9.80% on a year-to-date basis. Philip Morris International Inc, meanwhile, is down 22.00% year-to-date, and Altria Group Inc, is down 21.72% year-to-date. Combined, PM and MO make up approximately 11.6% of the underlying holdings of IYK.
