Friday Sector Laggards: Materials, Energy

Looking at the sectors faring worst as of midday Friday, shares of Materials companies are underperforming other sectors, showing a 0.2% loss. Within that group, WestRock Co (Symbol: WRK) and International Paper Co (Symbol: IP) are two large stocks that are lagging, showing a loss of 3.6% and 2.5%, respectively. Among the high volume ETFs , one ETF closely following materials stocks is the Materials Select Sector SPDR ETF (Symbol: XLB), which is down 0.4% on the day, and up 9.52% year-to-date. WestRock Co, meanwhile, is up 1.20% year-to-date, and International Paper Co is up 14.69% year-to-date. Combined, WRK and IP make up approximately 4.7% of the underlying holdings of XLB.

The next worst performing sector is the Energy sector, showing a 0.2% loss. Among large Energy stocks, Halliburton Company (Symbol: HAL) and Diamondback Energy, Inc. (Symbol: FANG) are the most notable, showing a loss of 1.8% and 1.7%, respectively. One ETF closely tracking Energy stocks is the Energy Select Sector SPDR ETF ( XLE ), which is down 0.9% in midday trading, and up 14.17% on a year-to-date basis. Halliburton Company, meanwhile, is up 5.85% year-to-date, and Diamondback Energy, Inc. is up 10.60% year-to-date. Combined, HAL and FANG make up approximately 3.4% of the underlying holdings of XLE.
