Friday Sector Laggards: Energy, Utilities

In afternoon trading on Friday, Energy stocks are the worst performing sector, showing a 0.6% loss. Within that group, Halliburton Company (Symbol: HAL) and Noble Energy Inc (Symbol: NBL) are two of the day's laggards, showing a loss of 2.5% and 2.3%, respectively. Among energy ETFs , one ETF following the sector is the Energy Select Sector SPDR ETF (Symbol: XLE), which is down 0.3% on the day, and up 7.00% year-to-date. Halliburton Company, meanwhile, is down 1.62% year-to-date, and Noble Energy Inc is up 17.54% year-to-date. Combined, HAL and NBL make up approximately 4.1% of the underlying holdings of XLE.

The next worst performing sector is the Utilities sector, showing a 0.2% loss. Among large Utilities stocks, NRG Energy Inc (Symbol: NRG) and CenterPoint Energy, Inc (Symbol: CNP) are the most notable, showing a loss of 1.8% and 0.8%, respectively. One ETF closely tracking Utilities stocks is the Utilities Select Sector SPDR ETF ( XLU ), which is down 0.2% in midday trading, and down 6.99% on a year-to-date basis. NRG Energy Inc, meanwhile, is up 15.71% year-to-date, and CenterPoint Energy, Inc, is down 9.11% year-to-date. Combined, NRG and CNP make up approximately 3.3% of the underlying holdings of XLU.
