Friday Sector Laggards: Energy, Materials

In afternoon trading on Friday, Energy stocks are the worst performing sector, showing a 0.9% loss. Within the sector, Baker Hughes, A GE Company (Symbol: BHGE) and Schlumberger Ltd (Symbol: SLB) are two of the day's laggards, showing a loss of 3.3% and 2.0%, respectively. Among energy ETFs , one ETF following the sector is the Energy Select Sector SPDR ETF (Symbol: XLE), which is down 0.9% on the day, and up 4.23% year-to-date. Baker Hughes, A GE Company, meanwhile, is up 5.59% year-to-date, and Schlumberger Ltd, is down 4.96% year-to-date. Combined, BHGE and SLB make up approximately 7.1% of the underlying holdings of XLE.

The next worst performing sector is the Materials sector, showing a 0.7% loss. Among large Materials stocks, Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. (Symbol: GT) and Martin Marietta Materials, Inc. (Symbol: MLM) are the most notable, showing a loss of 6.5% and 2.4%, respectively. One ETF closely tracking Materials stocks is the Materials Select Sector SPDR ETF ( XLB ), which is down 0.4% in midday trading, and down 1.33% on a year-to-date basis. Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co., meanwhile, is down 30.05% year-to-date, and Martin Marietta Materials, Inc., is down 9.79% year-to-date. MLM makes up approximately 2.2% of the underlying holdings of XLB.
