Financial stocks were sharply higher in Monday afternoon trading, including a more than 1.4% increase for the NYSE Financial Index while shares of financial companies in the S&P 500 were climbing more than 2.1%. The Philadelphia Housing Index was rising nearly 0.4%.

Among financial stocks moving on news:

(-) HomeTrust Bancshares ( HTBI ) was about 1% higher Monday afternoon after reporting improved fiscal Q1 financial results and also beating analyst estimates with its non-GAAP net income.

In other sector news:

(+) HSBC ( HSBC ) was climbing almost 6% higher on Monday after the bank reported an increase in turnover to $13.80 billion during the three months ended Sept. 30 from $12.98 billion during the same quarter last year and beating the Capital IQ consensus by around $280 million. Q3 net income also rose to $0.19 per share from $0.15 per share last year, matching analyst projections.

(+) Deutsche Bank AG ( DB ) Monday advanced nearly 1.5% after Reuters reported the German banking company plans to scrap an agreement selling its assets in Mexico.
