Financial stocks were slightly higher in afternoon trading, including a fractional gain for the NYSE Financial Index, while shares of financial companies in the S&P 500 were up 0.3%. The Philadelphia Housing Index was up 0.2%.

Among financial stocks moving on news:

(+) Hancock Whitney Corp ( HWC ) was 3% higher on Thursday after the bank holding company announced non-GAAP Q4 net income of $1.12 per share, improving on a $0.86 per share normalized profit during the year-ago period and matching the analyst mean.

In other sector news:

(+) M&T Bank ( MTB ) was nearly 5% higher this afternoon. The bank holding company Thursday reported Q4 net income of $3.79 per share, up from $2.04 per share during the year-ago period and beating the Capital IQ by $0.30 per share.

(-) Morgan Stanley ( MS ) was down 3.7% in recent trading after reporting adjusted Q4 net income trailing year-ago levels and analyst forecasts, earning $0.73 per share. The Street was at $0.89 per share compared with $0.84 per share during the final three months of 2017.
