American Express Maintains Pattern of Adding to Earnings-Driven After-Hours Moves in Next Day's Regular Session

American Express ( AXP ) is due with its Q4 results in the after-hours tonight, and analysts polled by Capital IQ expect the company to report a profit of $1.80 per share on revenue of $10.54 billion.

AXP favors widening between the sessions in its long-term performance following after-hours earnings events, adding to its evening trade in next-day action 26 times and reversing between the sessions 17 times in the data we've collected.

Longs will find in AXP a better track record of expanded upside post-earnings moves. Looking deeper into the performance data, AXP has seen an after-hours gain in 13 of the 44 quarters we've tracked, and in 10 of those instances the stock has added to its gains in next-day action, or 77% of the time.

In the 31 quarters where the stock saw an earnings-driven after-hours decline, it reversed direction in the following regular session in 14 of those sessions and widened in the other 17, or 55% of the time.

On Oct. 18, 2018, AXP gained 1.6% in night trade after topping Q3 Street estimates. The stock moved higher the next day, closing the Oct. 19 regular session up 3.8%.

On July 18, 2018, AXP declined 2.6% in evening trade after beating Q2 earnings expectations and meeting the revenue projection. The stock edged slightly lower the next day, closing the July 19 regular session down 2.7%.

On April 18, 2018, AXP firmed 3% in after-hours trade on the back of better-than-expected Q1 results. The stock jumped higher the next day, closing the April 19 regular session up 7.6%.
