NASDAQ Announces Mid-Month Open Short Interest Positions in NASDAQ Stocks as of Settlement Date May 15, 2014


NEW YORK, May 27, 2014 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- At the end of the settlement date of May 15, 2014, short interest in 2,189 NASDAQ Global MarketSM securities totaled 7,780,690,219 shares compared with 7,621,693,707 shares in 2,187 Global Market issues reported for the prior settlement date of April 30, 2014. The Mid-May short interest represents 3.99 days average daily NASDAQ Global Market share volume for the reporting period, compared with 4.09 days for the prior reporting period.

Short interest in 601 securities on The NASDAQ Capital MarketSM totaled 660,053,418 shares at the end of the settlement date of May 15, 2014 compared with 639,352,697 shares in 596 securities for the previous reporting period. This represents 5.02 days average daily volume, compared with the previous reporting period's figure of 4.66.

In summary, short interest in all 2,790 NASDAQ® securities totaled 8,440,743,637 shares at the May 15, 2014 settlement date, compared with 2,783 issues and 8,261,046,404 shares at the end of the previous reporting period. This is 4.05 days average daily volume, compared with an average of 4.12 days for the previous reporting period.

The open short interest positions reported for each NASDAQ security reflect the total number of shares sold short by all broker/dealers regardless of their exchange affiliations. A short sale is generally understood to mean the sale of a security that the seller does not own or any sale that is consummated by the delivery of a security borrowed by or for the account of the seller.
