About the German-American Steuben Parade

The German-American Steuben Parade is one of the largest celebrations of German culture in the United States and the most colorful parade on the streets of New York City. Founded in 1957, the parade mainly serves three purposes: To help German immigrants keep their traditions alive, to celebrate the achievements of historic German-Americans and to strengthen the German-American friendship.

Every year, the Steuben Parade includes more than 20 music, dance, and costume groups from Germany, thousands of marchers from German-American communities all over the US as well as many theme floats.

About the 52nd Steuben Parade:

Among the themes in this year's parade are: The 20th Anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, which would have not been possible without the help and friendship of the United States; the 40th Anniversary of the moon landing by German-American pioneer Neil Armstrong; and an homage to German-American baseball legend Lou Gehrig. This year's parade will be led by four Grand Marshals: Congressman Michael McMahon (13th Congressional District), Fox 5 NY reporter Linda Schmidt, A&P-Chairman Christian Haub, and Theobald Dengler, co-founder of the parade.
