NEW YORK, Aug. 25, 2009 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- In a release issued earlier today by the The NASDAQ OMX Group, Inc., under the same headline, please note that in the second paragraph, the short interest in 456 securities on The NASDAQ Capital Market(sm) totaled 152,733,883 shares at the end of the settlement date of August 14, 2009, and not 153,733,883 as previously stated. The corrected release follows:
At the end of the settlement date of August 14, 2009, short interest in 2,450 NASDAQ Global Market(sm) securities totaled 6,651,805,020 shares compared with 6,633,118,964 shares in 2,450 Global Market issues reported for the prior settlement date of July 31, 2009. The mid-August short interest represents 2.96 days average daily NASDAQ Global Market share volume for the reporting period, compared with 3.12 days for the prior reporting period.
Short interest in 456 securities on The NASDAQ Capital Market(sm) totaled 152,733,883 shares at the end of the settlement date of August 14, 2009 compared with 142,827,861 shares in 453 securities for the previous reporting period. This represents 1.80 days average daily volume, compared with the previous reporting period's figure of 2.01.
In summary, short interest in all 2,906 NASDAQ(r) securities totaled 6,804,538,903 shares at the August 14, 2009 settlement date, compared with 2,903 issues and 6,775,946,825 shares at the end of the previous reporting period. This is 2.92 days average daily volume, compared with an average of 3.09 days for the previous reporting period.
The open short interest positions reported for each NASDAQ security reflect the total number of shares sold short by all broker/dealers regardless of their exchange affiliations. A short sale is generally understood to mean the sale of a security that the seller does not own or any sale that is consummated by the delivery of a security borrowed by or for the account of the seller.
