Crude oil that leaked from a pipeline in the Gulf of Thailand over the weekend reached the tourist island of Koh Samet on Monday (July29), known for it's white sandy beaches and home to several resorts. Around 50,000 litres of crude oil poured into the sea on Saturday (July27) approximately 20 km (12 miles) off the coast of Rayong, southeast of the capital Bangkok. About 200 soldiers were deployed to help clean up the spill and 300 more will provide back-up, authorities said.
