Nepal has begun a further cull of chickens as they battle to contain an outbreak of the H5N1 strain of bird flu. The district of Bhaktapur has been declared a bird flu crisis zone in response to the outbreak. Rapid response teams have been sent in to farms to cull poultry and destroy feed and eggs. A ban on the sale, import and export of poultry and related products in the affected area came into force on August 14. Security checks have also been ordered to be stepped up along border points.
