UDR is a self administered real estate investment trust, or REIT, that owns, operates, acquires, renovates, develops, redevelops, and manages multifamily apartment communities generally located in high barrier-to-entry markets located throughout the United States. The high barrier-to-entry markets are characterized by limited land for new construction, difficult and lengthy entitlement processes, low single-family home affordability and strong employment growth potential. At December 31, 2012, our consolidated apartment portfolio included 145 communities located in 22 markets, with a total of 41,571 completed apartment homes, which are held through our subsidiaries, including the Operating Partnership, and consolidated joint ventures.
