Oil Sands Base Operations Our integrated Oil Sands Base operations, located near Fort McMurray, Alberta, involve numerous activities: º • º Mining and Extraction After overburden is removed, open-pit mining operations use shovels to excavate the oil sands bitumen ore, which is trucked to sizers and breaker units that reduce the size of the ore, then create a slurry of hot water, rock, sand and bitumen. The slurry is delivered via a hydrotransport pipeline to extraction plants. The raw bitumen is separated from the slurry using a hot water process that creates a bitumen froth.  ... More ...
