Spartan Stores is a leading regional grocery distributor and grocery retailer, operating principally in Michigan and Indiana. We operate two reportable business segments: Distribution and Retail. We estimate that we are the eleventh largest wholesale distributor to supermarkets in the United States and the largest wholesale distributor to supermarkets in Michigan. According to Trade Dimensions Market Scope, our distribution and retail operations hold a combined #1 or #2 market share in the Northern Michigan and Western Michigan markets we serve and a #3 market share in other Michigan markets. For the fiscal year ended March 27, 2010 ("fiscal 2010"), we generated net sales of $2.6 billion. Established in 1917 as a cooperative grocery distributor, Spartan Stores converted to a for-profit business corporation in 1973.
