Company Description (as filed with the SEC)

We are a real estate investment trust, or REIT, that was organized under the laws of the State of Maryland in 1998. As of December 31, 2013, we owned 375 properties (401 buildings) located in 40 states and Washington, D.C (including 14 properties (17 buildings) classified as held for sale). On that date, the undepreciated carrying value of our properties, net of impairment losses, was $5.3 billion, excluding properties classified as held for sale. Our portfolio includes: 265 senior living communities with 31,627 living units / beds, with an undepreciated carrying value of $3.4 billion; 100 properties (126 buildings) leased to medical providers, medical related businesses, clinics and biotech laboratory tenants, or MOBs, with 8.7 million square feet of space and an undepreciated carrying value of $1.7 billion; and 10 wellness centers with approximately 812,000 square feet of interior space plus outdoor developed facilities with an undepreciated carrying value of $180.  ...
