Company Description (as filed with the SEC)
We are one of the world's largest coal producers. For the year ended December 31, 2012 we sold approximately 140.8 million tons of coal, including approximately 4.3 million tons of coal we purchased from third parties, representing roughly 14% of the 2012 U.S. coal supply. We sell substantially all of our coal to power plants, steel mills and industrial facilities. At December 31, 2012, we operated, or contracted out the operation of, 32 active mines located in each of the major coal-producing regions of the United States. The locations of our mines and access to export facilities enable us to ship coal worldwide. Our History We were organized in Delaware in 1969 as Arch Mineral Corporation. In July 1997, we merged with Ashland Coal, Inc., a subsidiary of Ashland Inc. that was formed in 1975. As a result of the merger, we became one of the largest producers of low-sulfur coal in the eastern United States. ... More ...
