VoIP or Voice over IP – VoIP is when calls are made or accepted over the Internet or other internal network. The Internet and internal networks have traditionally been used to transfer data but new technology is allowing voice pockets to be sent in the same manner. VoIP is becoming increasingly popular due the low cost of long distance.
POTS or Plain Old Telephone Service - This is the standard land line that most are familiar with. POTS is the traditional home telephone with local and long distance service.
QOS or Quality of Service - Is the dependability of the system or network to handle the amount of traffic that it receives. A high QOS will have relatively little down time and a minimal delay.
Centrex – The typical office or business phone system that typically offers one or two incoming lines with several extensions available.
Softkeys – Softkeys are the buttons on the telephone hand set. These buttons can be programmed to activate different features that are available such as automatic return call, call block or speed dialing.
Find me/Follow Me – When using find me/follow me, if an incoming call arrives at your number and is not answered, the line will automatically start to dial other assigned numbers such as an office phone or a cell phone.
Gateway In VoIP Systems – A gateway is part of a network and it works to change voice or fax transmissions as they occur from a public telephone network.
KTS or Key Telephone System – A KTS is a phone system in which the phone hand set has many buttons for added external phone lines. A light is usually displayed on the hand set when the line or extension is in use so that the user can select the appropriate external phone line.
PBX or Private Branch Exchange – A PBS phone system is a private telephone system that is popular among small businesses. The PBX is connected to transmission lines provided by the public telephone provider. The newer PBX systems offer several features such as interoffice paging and call forwarding to voice mailboxes.
IP PBX or Internet Protocol Private Branch Exchange – Is the same type of phone system as the PBX or Private Branch Exchange with the difference being that the IP PBX utilizes IP (internet) lines instead of traditional phone lines.
