About Mentoring USA:
Mentoring USA, founded in 1995 by former first lady of the state of New York, Matilda Raffa Cuomo, is an effective, early-intervention mentoring program to prevent school dropout. By providing mentors at schools, community centers, and foster care agencies, Mentoring USA helps children, ages 7-21, improve their self-esteem, broaden their vision of opportunities and succeed in school. The Mentoring USA model has proven to be effective in helping a child to reach his or her full potential. When each child is matched with a trained, caring, adult volunteer mentor on a one-to-one basis, the child's grades improve, school absenteeism minimizes, and children gain new confidence and hope for the future. One of Mentoring USA's innovative programs is the Youth Financial Empowerment (YFE) initiative, designed for teens living in foster care, and including a unique partnership with New York City and Citigroup. NYC provides a 2:1 match toward the mentees' personal savings in an IDA account. Participating mentees learn how to budget and manage funds with the help of their mentors, while saving up to $3,000 as a result of the program.
