About this Event:
Alhurra (Arabic for "The Free One") is a 24-hour Arabic-language satellite television channel operated by the Middle East Broadcasting Networks, Inc. (MBN), funded by a grant from the U.S. Government. By broadcasting accurate and objective news and information, Alhurra Television promotes democracy and freedom of expression to 22 countries throughout the Middle East on the Nilesat and Arabsat satellite systems. In addition to reporting on world events, Alhurra provides context and analysis to give viewers a broader understanding of the actions impacting the region.
The network also hosts a number of discussion programs that examine political and social issues of interest to the audience in the Middle East, airing viewpoints not often discussed freely in the region. Through correspondents at the State Department, White House, Congress and the Pentagon, Alhurra illuminates U.S. policies and domestic debates on those policies for Middle Eastern audiences. Guests from American think tanks and interviews with U.S. officials provide a comprehensive view of U.S. foreign policy as well as a better understanding of the American people and our system of governance.
In addition to reporting news of regional and international events, the channel provides information on a variety of subjects, including health, entertainment news, sports, fashion and science and technology. In April 2004, MBN launched a separate channel, Alhurra-Iraq, which features news and current affairs programming specifically directed at the Iraqi audience. In August 2006, MBN launched a third channel to Europe to reach Arabic-speaking viewers in Europe.
Alhurra is operated by the non-profit corporation "The Middle East Broadcasting Networks, Inc." (MBN). MBN is financed through a grant from the Broadcasting Board of Governors (BBG), an independent federal agency funded by the U.S. Congress. The BBG oversees MBN and acts as a firewall to protect the professional independence and integrity of the broadcasters.
