Literacy, Inc.

Literacy, Inc. (LINC) promotes early literacy by activating school, family, business and community partners in New York City's low-income neighbourhoods to create and sustain reading programs for at-risk children. Over the years, 600 partners including schools, community-based organizations, businesses, government agencies, and individuals have been involved in hundreds of reading initiatives. Last year alone, LINC and its partners created 164 reading partner programs and 193 literacy events providing 60,000 hours of additional reading time in 20 New York City neighbourhoods and in Hudson, New York. These programs took place at 227 different sites including schools, libraries, local restaurants, parks and play-streets, laundromats, clinics and health centers, apartment building lobbies, homeless shelters, banks, and senior citizen centers.

Our work has been recognized by major funders in the field and has recently received the James Patterson PageTurner Award for promoting the enjoyment of reading. In January, Mimi Lieber, LINC's founder, was honoured with the prestigious Lewis Hine Award from the National Child Labor Committee for her commitment to the well-being, growth, and development of children and youth.
